Embracing Heritage and Harmony in Granada, Spain

Erasmus+ “Culture Creators and Carriers” | Mobility Report: March 3–9, 2024

As part of the Erasmus+ project “Culture Creators and Carriers,” partner schools from Greece, Italy, Spain, and Türkiye came together in Granada, Spain, from the 3rd to the 9th of March 2024, for a week of rich intercultural exchange and collaborative learning. The mobility was the first in a series of four educational journeys exploring intangible cultural heritage (ICH) as defined by UNESCO.

This exciting initiative brought students and educators together to explore culture not as something fixed in museums, but as a living, breathing expression of daily life—from food and music to rituals and crafts. Granada, a city steeped in multicultural history, provided the perfect setting.

Day-by-Day Highlights

March 4 — Opening and Orientation
The mobility began with a coordinators’ meeting and student-focused ice-breaking activities. Participants from all four countries had the chance to meet, interact, and build the foundations of new international friendships. The atmosphere was warm, inclusive, and full of anticipation.

March 5 — Civic Engagement & Urban Identity
The group visited the Granada Town Hall, where they learned about local governance and community participation. It was an opportunity to understand how cultural heritage is protected and celebrated at the municipal level, connecting historical legacy with modern civic life.

March 6 — Exploring the Alhambra
A guided tour of the Alhambra introduced students to centuries of layered history, architecture, and intercultural coexistence. The experience was both educational and awe-inspiring, reinforcing the idea that heritage can be a bridge between cultures and generations.

March 7 — Workshops & Presentations
Students and teachers participated in partner presentations and hands-on workshops. The highlight was the introduction to Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) in Spain, where participants learned how UNESCO preserves and promotes cultural expressions like oral traditions, performing arts, and rituals.

March 8 — Celebration of Culture
A joyful and interactive day featured a variety of activities:

  • A Kahoot quiz testing knowledge on culture and heritage.
  • A live Flamenco performance, giving insight into this expressive art form.
  • A cooking session preparing Gazpacho Andaluz, promoting the connection between food and cultural identity.
  • The day concluded with an intercultural party, where students shared music, dance, and traditions from their own countries.

Lasting Impact

This mobility experience in Granada went far beyond sightseeing. It fostered intercultural dialogue, promoted shared European values, and deepened everyone’s understanding of how culture can unite us despite national differences. Participants returned home with new perspectives, stronger connections, and a shared mission to protect and promote our collective heritage.

As one participant said: “This was a journey not just through Spain, but through the hearts of all our cultures.”
